The AMD Radeon R7 SSD is manufactured by OCZ (Toshiba). The release of the R7 is in line with OCZ's approximate six-monthly release cycle. Apart from newer NAND memory, the R7 has the same components as the OCZ Vector 150. Comparing the AMD R7 and Vector 150 shows that peak performance is broadly unchanged. We don't have any user samples for the new R7 yet but based on components, it's reasonable to assume that real-world effective speeds will also be comparable to the Vector 150. Although the 240GB R7 SSD is a strong performer, disappointingly, it brings nothing new to the table in terms of hardware. Unless OCZ/Toshiba can pull something out of the bag they will continue to loose market share to Samsung who are still managing to innovate with each of their releases; most recently the 850 pro series. The Kingston HyperX Fury has the same controller as its HyperX 3K sibling; the only difference between the two drives is the use of cheaper Micron 20nm NAND in the newer Fury. Comparing the performance differences between the HyperX Fury and 3K shows that the newer 20nm NAND results in an effective performance decrease of around 30% for a price saving of just 12%. The Fury was never aimed at the high performance sector of the market but given the known compressible performance weaknesses of its Sandforce 2281 controller and its relatively non-budget price tag, the 120GB Fury will struggle to find rational takers in today's market. There are far better value alternatives available for just a few more dollars. [Sep '14SSDrivePro]
