The Toshiba HG5d is a reasonable SSD. Considering that Toshiba is amongst the few manufacturers that produce both their own NAND flash and SSD controllers, the HG5d is a little disappointing. With a Real World Speed of 444 MBps the Q Series lies just above the 50th percentile. Relative performance is better for server orientated workloads where the HG5d scored an AS SSD Total score of 970 points putting it in 11th position and at the 66th percentile, additionally the HG5d demonstrated very strong mixed 4K transfer rates peaking at 51.1 MB/s, the second highest seen to date on a 256GB SSD. The Toshiba HG5d is not a bad SSD but neither is it cutting edge which given it's relative youth counts strongly against it. Overall there are both faster and cheaper deals to be had elsewhere. This is Seagate's third foray into the the SSD market and it's clear from the specifications that Seagate haven't taken any chances. The 600 incorporates the now reasonably established LAMD LM87800 controller coupled with 19 NM Toshiba MLC, a very similar combination to Corsair's Neutron GTX. This combination of hardware coupled with Seagate's custom firmware produces a very solid set of performance figures. With a Real World Performance rating of 531 MB/s and an AS SSD total score of 1131 the Seagate 600 demonstrates both superb server and consumer performance capabilities. The pricing on the 600 is currently around average for a group leading SSD and likely to drop with time as the 600 is still relatively recent. Overall the 240GB Seagate 600 represents good value for money and delivers great performance. [Aug '13SSDrivePro]
